As we step into 2025, it’s worth reflecting on the aviation industry’s remarkable milestones over the past year. The U.S. Air Force launched the Integrated Capability Command (ICC), streamlining procurement to enhance efficiency in defense operations. In commercial aviation, Iberia Airlines’ inaugural long-haul Airbus A321XLR flight from Madrid to Boston redefined transatlantic travel with its fuel-efficient, sustainable routes and 4,700-nautical-mile range. Meanwhile, the Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) sector matured as regulators and private industry leaders collaborated to advance technology, safety, and sustainability. Building on these achievements, we’d like to share the upcoming trends shaping 2025, from AI-driven cockpit automation to groundbreaking public-private partnerships.

Defense Collaboration with Venture Backed Startups

“Defense Primes are increasingly recognizing the value of partnerships with smaller, agile companies that can innovate quickly while maintaining a strong focus on safety. Our collaboration with Honeywell exemplifies this growing trend,” said Merlin CEO and Founder Matt George.

In 2025, expect these partnerships to drive cutting-edge solutions that balance speed, innovation, and safety, ensuring the industry keeps pace with evolving demands.

AI-Driven Cockpit Automation Takes Off

Merlin CTO Tim Burns, envisions a future where artificial intelligence takes center stage in cockpit automation: “I expect significant progress in AI-driven cockpit automation, reducing pilot workload, especially on long flights. Technologies like Airbus’s UpNext DragonFly demonstrator and ACAS X are paving the way for reduced-crew operations.”

Merlin’s technology is driving this transition by handling routine tasks and decision-making, enabling smaller crew sizes without compromising safety. Tim added, ‘In 2025, I foresee significant progress in certifying AI-powered systems that assist pilots. At Merlin, we’re collaborating closely with regulators to shape the standards for safely integrating these technologies, ensuring they enhance both safety and efficiency while supporting reduced crew operations.’”

Public-Sector Talent Joins the Innovation Wave

Chief Policy and Regulations Officer at Merlin, Travis Mason, anticipates a shift in talent dynamics within aviation. “With regulators and policy makers turning to the private sector to mature the AAM industry, 2025 calls for the reverse: private-sector talent stepping into public aviation roles to integrate advanced air mobility (AAM) and drive novel advancements in AI, sustainability, and cybersecurity.”

This cross-pollination of expertise will catalyze innovations that not only push technological boundaries but also align with sustainability and safety goals.

2025 will bring a convergence of technology, talent, and partnerships to reshape aviation. From AI-powered safety systems to groundbreaking collaborations, the industry is poised for a year of transformation.

Stay tuned as Merlin continues to contribute to this exciting future!
