As we continue to take meaningful steps forward to develop the world’s most capable pilot, we’re excited to share that Merlin is partnering with the Flight Safety Foundation (FSF), the leading non-profit institution dedicated to the advancement of aviation safety. This partnership establishes a strategic and ongoing collaboration between FSF and Merlin, bolstering further research and development in the integration of advanced automation systems and human-machine teaming (HMT) to enhance safety standards across the aviation industry.
Central to this partnership is the human factors working group, led by co-chairs Dr. Alan Hobbs and Human Factors Engineer Dr. Carl Pankok Jr. of Merlin. This group aims to investigate the best practices and challenges of human-machine teaming with increasingly autonomous operations in the cockpit.
As aviation technology advances, the collaboration between humans and machines will continue to deepen. Accurately understanding and measuring workload is fundamental to designing autonomy solutions that operators can trust. Ensuring a sharp focus on human factors is critical to reach truly safe and robust autonomy. Through this partnership, Merlin and FSF are driving significant progress toward the certification and deployment of advanced automation systems to ensure safety, efficiency, and scalability by focusing on several key areas, including:
- Policy Development and Research: Addressing key aspects of flight automation and human-machine interactions to pave the way for safer, more efficient aviation systems.
- Regulatory and Industry Support: Endorsing the advancement of HMT methodologies that prioritize safety and operational integrity.
- Promotion of Global Standards: Working towards establishing and promoting global policy and operational standards that will enhance aviation safety worldwide.
By combining our expertise in advanced aviation technologies with FSF’s commitment to enhancing global aviation safety, this partnership is uniquely equipped to tackle the complexities of modern airspace. It reflects a shared dedication to advancing adaptable safety protocols that align with new technologies while maintaining the industry’s rigorous standards. Together, Merlin and FSF are leading the charge toward a future where advanced automation and effective human-machine teaming are essential elements of safe, efficient air travel. This partnership not only highlights the evolving landscape of aviation safety but also reinforces the industry’s ongoing commitment to ensuring safe skies for all.
